New research published in Epilepsy & Behavior: “Prioritising follow-up for people with suspected epilepsy using a digital EEG biomarker.”

Posted

A great way to start the week! New research from our team has been published in Epilepsy & Behavior.

The challenge: when someone presents with a suspected seizure, their first routine EEG is often inconclusive. They’re then placed on a waiting list for follow-up testing, typically in the order they were referred. During this wait, people are living in uncertainty and not receiving the treatment they need.

Our question: could BioEP help identify people with epilepsy who should be prioritised for EEG?

Working with colleagues across six NHS sites, we analysed 196 non-contributory EEGs and used BioEP’s similarity score to reorder follow-up lists. We then compared outcomes against standard referral-based scheduling.

Key findings:

* BioEP-based ordering consistently prioritised people who were subsequently diagnosed with epilepsy
* For a waitlist of 40 patients, six fewer follow-up EEGs were needed to see 50% of those with epilepsy
* The diagnostic yield of follow-up EEGs increased by up to one third

This won’t replace clinical judgement, but it demonstrates how computational approaches can help clinicians prioritise limited resources and reduce diagnostic delays for those most at risk.

Congratulations to joint first authors Rosie Charles and Dr Emanuela De Falco, as well as Kay Meiklejohn, John Terry and our Scientific Director Wessel Woldman from Team Neuronostics, and to all our NHS collaborators (especially Professor Rohit Shankar MBE) who made this work possible.
