Neuronostics Co-Founder Elected Fellow of Academy of MedicalSciences

Posted

BRISTOL, UK (22 May 2025) – Neuronostics, the pioneering digital health company
transforming epilepsy care through computational biomarkers, is proud to announce that
Professor John Terry, Co-Founder and Managing Director, has been elected a Fellow of the
prestigious Academy of Medical Sciences.

The Academy of Medical Sciences is the UK’s independent authority representing medical
science, with a mission to advance biomedical research and its translation into benefits for
society. Election to the Fellowship recognises exceptional contributions to the medical
sciences and is considered one of the highest honours in the UK healthcare and research
community.

Professor Terry has been recognised for his outstanding work as an interdisciplinary scientist
whose contributions span both academia and industry. His pioneering research in epilepsy
has led to breakthrough insights into how seizures emerge from large-scale brain networks
and the development of BioEP™, Neuronostics’ revolutionary digital biomarker that reveals
the likelihood of epilepsy from clinically inconclusive EEG.

Speaking about the announcement, Anne Hyland, Chair of the Neuronostics Board,
said:
“John’s election to the Academy is a testament to his vision and leadership in
advancing our understanding of epilepsy. His ability to translate complex mathematical
concepts into clinically valuable tools has positioned Neuronostics at the forefront of
innovation in neurological care.”

Under Professor Terry’s leadership, Neuronostics has secured ISO13485 certification and
UKCA marking for BioEP has been received in the UK, enabling the technology to be used
within the NHS. Neuronostics is currently applying for regulatory approvals in a number of
overseas territories, including the US. Health economic analysis suggests BioEP applied to
the first EEG could save significant time and cost, potentially transforming epilepsy
diagnosis, which currently takes over a year on average and has a 30% misdiagnosis rate.

Dr. Wessel Woldman, Co-Founder and Scientific Director at Neuronostics, added:
“John’s recognition by the Academy is wonderful and well deserved. His commitment to
bridging the gap between mathematical theory and clinical practice has been fundamental
to our success. This honour reflects not only his scientific excellence but also his dedication
to improving the lives of people with epilepsy.”

Professor Terry will be formally admitted to the Academy at a ceremony on Wednesday 9
July 2025, joining a Fellowship of over 1,400 world-leading researchers who are at the heart
of the Academy’s work.

Beyond his academic and commercial achievements, Professor Terry is known for his
passion for involving the public and people with lived experience in research. Alongside Paul
Jepson (Creative Director, Landmark Theatres) he co-created and co-directed “Beyond My
Control,” a play that brings to life the mathematics of epilepsy. With Professor Caroline
Gillett (Assistant Professor of Public and Patient Involvement and Engagement, University
of Birmingham) he co-created an Artist-in-Residence scheme embedding artists with
research teams leading to multiple exhibitions.

Professor Andrew Morris CBE FRSE PMedSci, President of the Academy of Medical
Sciences, said:
“It is a privilege to welcome these 54 exceptional scientists to our
Fellowship. Each new Fellow brings unique expertise and perspective to addressing the most
significant health challenges facing society. The breadth of disciplines represented in this
year’s cohort – from mental health and infectious disease to cancer biology and respiratory
medicine – reflects the rich diversity of medical science today. Their election comes at a
crucial time when scientific excellence and collaboration across disciplines are essential for
addressing global health challenges both now and in the future. We look forward to working
with them to advance biomedical research and create an environment where the best
science can flourish for the benefit of people everywhere.”
